Chapter 1 - Ancestors
This gallery includes documents tracing the political, social and financial activity of the Herriman family, including a notice for a political lecture with tickets available at the Herriman and Chessé tailor shop; a transcription from a Creole seance attended by Herriman’s father and grandfather in which a departed relative spoke to the assembled; a letter in French from Herriman’s grandfather from a trip in France where he had gone to procure fabrics for the family tailor shop; and a copy of the voting-rights petition signed by Herriman’s father and grandfather. Also featured are maps of the Herrimans’ neighborhood in New Orleans and Krazy Kat daily strips commenting on ancestors.
