The Illustrated Krazy
Chapter 14 - The Kat and the Tramp
This gallery features images that reveal the close relationship between Krazy Kat and early film. The sizable influence of Charlie Chaplin is seen in Chaplin homages by Herriman and Tad Dorgan; the Chaplinesque characters of both Baron Bean and the new Krazy Kat who emerges in the large-format Sunday strips; and a later review of The Gold Rush that Herriman wrote in Krazy’s voice. Krazy Kat and Ignatz welcome new animations to the screen, and the influence of Krazy Kat on early Disney is evident in an advertisement for one of Disney’s 1920s Alice Comedies. Also seen here are Herriman’s cartoons about his own bouts with rheumatism, as well as a poem and a cartoon that give glimpses of the Hearst art room, both by Tad Dorgan.
