The Illustrated Krazy
Chapter 7 - Tad
This chapter is named for Herriman’s friend Tad Dorgan, and this gallery includes the cartoon with which Herriman welcomed Dorgan to New York City, as well as an accounting of the memorable night when Herriman and Dorgan went to the theater and had some fun with boxer Bob Fitzsimmons. Herriman comes into his own as a sports and editorial cartoonist for Hearst’s New York American in these large-scale works, many of which haven’t been seen since they were first published. A cartoon-photo hybrid marks the entrance of photography into newspapers, which ultimately will replace news and sports illustrating and cartooning.
