This gallery includes George Herriman’s birth certificate as well as his birth announcement in the Daily Picayune newspaper. There are no existing photographs of George Herriman’s parents or grandparents, but photographs of Herriman’s cousins, the Chessé family, can be seen here. A reference to Jelly Roll Morton is included in one Krazy Kat comic, while others feature sly discussions of the family’s biracial identity. We don’t know what Herriman knew about his New Orleans childhood, but in this large Sunday strip, Krazy Kat learns of humble origins and joyfully embraces them.
