Some of the finest pre-Krazy Kat comic strips include Gooseberry Sprig and Baron Mooch, the latter of which even includes a Herriman cameo. Charles Van Loan’s column, illustrated by Herriman, describes the goings-on in a cafe that Herriman and his Examiner colleagues frequented. Also seen here are advertisements featuring Bud Fisher’s characters Mutt and Jeff, likely drawn by Herriman, an Examiner staff artist at the time.
