The Illustrated Krazy
Chapter 12 - Revolutionaries and Dingbats
This gallery includes first New York Evening Journal comics page, featuring both The Family Upstairs and Krazy Kat. Other examples of the first years of Krazy Kat reveal that “Ignatz” was initially used for the name of a Native American character, which Herriman drew as a stereotyped caricature. Krazy Kat’s own race is suggested in repeated references to phrenology. Also seen here is a photo of the Rhinelander Building, the home of Hearst’s art department where Herriman created Krazy Kat and Ignatz.
