This gallery features a few of the many gifts that Herriman gave to friends, including a picture to Mike Kauppi, who with his wife Lempi lived with Herriman and did odd jobs for him, including, apparently, building a bench on Herriman’s property for passers-by to sit and look over the Hollywood view. Also seen here is a gift for Hal Roach with caricatures of all the stars of his comedies; a wedding gift for Hal’s niece Barbara Roach; and drawings made for the Uplifters organization. (For more on Herriman’s gift to Hal Roach, see this article.) There are also drawings for a nurse who helped Herriman in one of his hospital stays. Like her father, Bobbie Herriman loved to give drawings as gifts, including this one of her longtime medical companion, Vivian Hammerly. The baby in George Herriman’s arms is Bobbie’s beloved daughter, Dinah.
