The Illustrated Krazy
Chapter 5 - Impussanations
Here are several of Herriman’s little-seen early comic strips, including his fanciful theosophic lobster tale that presages metaphysical themes that will later be revisited in Krazy Kat. Also shown is an episode from the short-lived Musical Mose series, in which Herriman, then 21 years old, employs racist imagery common to the day — yet uses it to tell a very personal story about an artist’s racial reversals. (See introduction to The Illustrated Krazy for more discussion on the subject of racial stereotypes in Herriman’s early cartoons.)
